The whale shark, or rhincodon typus, is the largest shark, and largest fish alive today. These sharks weight an impressive amount of around 11 tons and can be up to 60 feet in length. Just like human fingerprints, whale sharks have a unique pattern of spots, which allow individuals to be identified. These gentle giants feed on plankton, and may dive to 1000 meters deep but are often found near the surface, free feeding. Whale sharks are filter feeders, can process more than 6,000 liters of water, have thousands of teeth, and can be found in tropical and warm temperate seas.
